A Good Man Is Hard to Find

"She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life" (O’Connor) This quote in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor is about how the main character, the grandmother, is always trying to do and look good. She is always trying to be a lady, yet by judging other people, she thinks she is superior over others because she is older. She claims that her conscience is a guiding force in her life. While the grandma was facing her death in the end, she was praising Jesus and being extra nice to the Misfit, telling them how he must have been from good blood and have a clean heart. Yet in her real life when not faced with death, she was a self-righteous, nagging old woman, judgmental against other people. This is what the escaped convict concludes about the grandma after they shot her to death, and she lay like a school girl smiling up at the clouds in the sky (O’Connor). If she were faced with death every single day, and had a gun pointed to her face every day of her life, and was faced with the realities of death every single minute of her life, she would always be a nice, kind-hearted old woman and wouldn’t be so judgmental of other people. The grandma would have gained the self-awareness and compassion that she lacked. In the beginning of the story, the grandma is more irritating towards the family and always trying to get her way: “You all ought to take them somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad. They never been to east Tennessee” (299). John Wesley says, “If you don’t want to go to Florida, why dontcha stay at home?” (300). June Star agrees and adds, “She wouldn’t stay home for a million bucks, afraid she’d miss something. She has to go everywhere we go” (300). In the ending of the story, her dialect changes 100%, to being nice and praiseworthy: “You could be honest too if you’d only try, said the grandmother,...
