David. Herbert. Lawrence (1885-1930) is known as one of the greatest literary figure in the literary history of England. He is versatile in many literary genres such as novel, poem and prose. But his favorite literary genre is the form of novel that, according to his opinion, can manifest the human life to the highest extent.
The modernist symbolism as adopted by D.H. Lawrence is different from the traditional realist and romanticist symbolism. The traditional symbolism is characterized as the conspicuous resemblance between the embodying objects and the embodied objects because it is universal and has been commonly adopted in traditional canons. So it’s meaning is concrete and easy to understand. Whereas. The modernist symbolism is not used to disclose some concrete meanings but to represent some flowing intricate psychological complex, the ethereal imaginations and illusions, and the evanescent impressions. The adoption of symbolism can lay bare the minute relationship between the characters and the intricate relationship between the characters and the objects, which can afford a fresh perspective in the mood, the subconscious ness and the unconsciousness of the characters. The traditional development of plot is thus made back grounded but more circuitous with multiplied meanings. Modernist symbolism as an artistic craftsmanship is permeated in all the works of D.H. Lawrence.
