After concluding that light moves in a waveform 19th century physicists look to other wave motions to better understand light. They came up with the idea of the Aether a medium in which a light could travel, Many experiments were done to prove this Aether one of the famous ones is the Michelson and Morley experiment, this experiment was a null hypothesis and disapproved the theory of the Aether. This directly led to the special theory of relativity.
So what is the luminiferous aether (or ether), meaning light-bearing substance, shortly after the discovery that light was a waveform physicists looked to other waveforms such as sound, water and earthquake waves they all had one thing in common. the need to travel through a medium. Because of this physicists concluded that light needed a waveform which light could travel through. Such a medium could not be found but belief in this medium was so strong that it was given a name. the luminiferous Aether.
*Its properties where: Filled all of space had low densetiy and was perfectly transparent
*Permeated all matter and yet was completely permeable to materiable objects
*Had great elasticity to support and propagate the light waves.
Although these seemed odd now the concept of the Aether was a completely new and unknown phenomenon and they where accounted for to explain it.
The search for the Aether occupied phycisists for several decades until it was finally accepted that. The Aether dosnt exist, and that electromagnetic waves do not need a medium to travel through
