In the 1970’s a war between two countries was started. This war, called the Afghanistan war, raged across decades. Much controversy has surrounded the war. How did it start? Who started it? How does it affect me? Who was right? These are some of the questions that will be answered in the following report. The purpose of this paper on the soviet invasion is to observe the nature of the Soviet military intervention, evaluate its economical repercussions and assess the Soviet Union’s motivation for engaging in a show of power Afghanistan, and give my opinion on what I think about the invasion.
To begin, I believe the soviets made a poor decision when they decided to invade the country of Afghanistan. Russia’s economy at the time was very weak and keeping troops in another country for too long would be disastrous. It was a very misguided battle that in the end accomplished nothing, but to create bad blood between the two countries. The Afghanistan war had spanned across the years of 1970 to 1992. According to an article found on www.infoplease.com “The conflict had its origins in the 1978 coup that overthrew Afghan president Sardar Muhammad Daud Khan, who had come to power by ousting the king in 1973. The president was assassinated and a pro-Soviet Communist government under Noor Mohammed Taraki was established. In 1979 another coup, which brought Hafizullah Amin to power, provoked an invasion (Dec., 1979) by Soviet forces and the installation of Babrak Karmal as president” (Afghanistan War — Infoplease.com.)"
