The novels, The Bread Winner and Breaking Through, are both inspiring books because they each show people living in hard times and making it through. The most inspiration comes from the main characters of each book, Parvana and Francisco. They are children who support their families through difficult times. The books have similarities with family, life and culture, and differences with school, religion and jobs. The similarities and differences of Parvana and Francisco are what inspire them through the journey of the novel.
There are many incredible similarities in both novels that inspire Parvana and Francisco. First, their families were both separated. Parvana’s father was taken to jail so her family was apart for many months, until her father was released. Similar to Parvana’s family, Francisco’s family was separated. Francisco’s father, mother, and almost all of his siblings stayed in Mexico while Francisco and Roberto went to California. After months of waiting, finally the rest of Francisco’s family came back to California to live. Second, Parvana and Francisco lived through tough times. An example would be that Parvana was always stuck inside because of her gender. Also, there was a lot of violence because of the Taliban. Just like Parvana, Francisco lived through hard times. He always was working, because his family needed money badly. Also, Francisco was discriminated against because he was Mexican. Finally, Parvana and Francisco’s cultures were blended with a different culture. Parvana was an Afghan and her culture was mixed with the Taliban. It was hard for many people because of the no women outside, and no school rules. Also, Parvana’s family became poor, and that is hard to get used to because of the Taliban’s bombs. Francisco’s culture was also mixed, but his situation was Mexican mixed with American.   It was hard for his family because no one knew English. Also, the respect in the family was different.
