Answering the Next Call

I along with many of you am guilty of driving while answering my phone or texting while driving. This has become a systematic function for all of us. We don’t realize we are endangering ourselves or others by this robotic habit. Although Nevada has just enacted the no cell phone use behind the wheel, is that really enough? More than fifty research studies have reported the risks of cell phone use while driving. It is the #1 source of driver inattention behind the wheel. A person on a cell phone is four times more likely to be involved in an accident. In a study by the University of Utah and the National Highway Safety Administration says, the conversation itself was as distracting as dialing the phone or retrieving a message. In 2008, over 800,000 people were texting, making calls, or using a hands free device while driving in the U.S. Driver’s talking on their phones are 18% slower to react to brake lights according to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Lastly, distractions from cell phone use while driving extends a driver’s reaction time as much as a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit.
Talking, Texting, or dialing while behind the wheel is a dangerous combination and are not meant to be done simultaneously. Despite the risks, the majority of teens ignore cell phone restrictions. They are undeterred by studies that show that text messages reduce a driver’s reaction time. They are under the false misconception that it cannot and will not happen to them. They are safe and know how to manage both pieces of equipment. Another issue in my opinion is the false perception that a hands free device is safer to use while driving. This lulls people into believing that its use will prevent them from getting into an accident. I am quite certain in the future, hands free devices will be found just as dangerous and deadly as holding that cell phone in your hand. It is our responsibility to educate our youth about the dangers...
