Chapter 4 section 3
        I. Cell Organelles and Structures
1. Plasma Membrane
  a) Plasma membrane- only allows certain molecules to enter or leave the cell.
2. Membrane Lipids
  a) Phospholipid bilayer- double layers that make up cell membranes
3. Membrane Proteins
  a) Integral protein- Specific proteins embedded within the lipid bilayer
  b) Peripheral protein- Lie on one side of the membrane and are not embedded in
            4.   Fluid Mosaic Model
  a) Fluid Mosaic Model- states that the phospholipid bilayer behaves more like a
      fluid then a solid.
      II. Nucleus
  a) Chromosomes- structures in the nucleus made of DNA and protein
1. Nuclear Envelope
  a) Nuclear Envelope- - a double membrane that surrounds the nucleus
2. Nucleolus
  a) Nucleolus- Site where DNA is concentrated when it is in the process of
    making ribosomal RNA.
      III. Mitochondria
    a) Mitochondria- tiny organelles that transfer energy from organic molecules to
      adenosine triphosphate.
1. Mitochondrial DNA
    a) Mitochondria have their own DNA and can reproduce only by the division of       preexisting mitochondria.
      IV. Ribosomes
    a) Ribosomes- Organelles made of protein and RNA
      V. Endoplasmic Reticulum
a) Endoplasmic reticulum- system of membranes, tubes and sacs called     cisternae
1. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
    a) System of interconnected flattened sacs covered in ribosomes
2. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
    a) The smooth ER lacks ribosomes
      VI. Golgi Apparatus
a) another system of flattened membranous sacs
    VII. Vesicles
1. Lysosomes
    a) vesicles that bud from the golgi apparatus and contain digestive enzymes
2. Peroxisomes
    a) similar to lysosomes but contain different enzymes and are not produced by
      the golgi   apparatus
3. Other Vesicles
    a) Glyxosomes- found in the seeds of some plants
4. Protein Synthesis
