Although I have been studying art for quite some time now, the question “What makes someone an artist?” is still something that I struggle to find an answer for. I can appreciate a person’s understanding of basic design principles or technical skill, but an interest is not sparked until a person presents something that challenges my expectations. Art can be an escape into a new realm full of possibilities of visual and conceptual exploration, it is just a matter of risk taking on the artist’s part. Having set a new standard for experimental animators, The Brothers Quay have re-invented the normal perception of what a narrative animation should be, while also exhibiting advancements in exploring an environment through the eyes of a camera.
The Quay Brothers, Stephen and Timothy, began their pursuit towards artistry as illustrators, studying at the Philadelphia College of Art, and then transferring to The Royal College of Art in London in the 70’s to explore film making. Gathering a great deal of influence from eastern European traditions, The Brothers Quay construct elaborate miniature sets and puppets to create dark and surreal worlds that then come alive on camera. Because the brothers have had extensive training in drawing and painting, their animations retain a clear, well-planned design foundation. The colors, the textures, and the materials used in the sets become equally as important as the characters, and, in most cases, become characters themselves. Focusing more on the aesthetics, the brothers intentionally eliminate a clear story line from their films. Through juxtapositions of objects and scenes, there is an automatic connection made between the images by the audience, which creates a sort of stream of conscious narrative that is loosely guided by choices The Brothers Quay make to repeat imagery and direct the camera.
