Parents | Elections to be held to elect a parent governor. Although a parent who works more than 500 hours per year cannot be a parent governor |
Local Authority | Nominated by elected member of the county council. Anyone who is eligible to be staff governor cannot be a governor in this category. |
Staff | Head teachers and support staff, all fall into this category. The head can choose to be a governor or not and automatically have a seat reserved. All other staff is elected. |
Community | To be elected by other governing bodies. These governors should be members of the wider community served by the school. |
Roles and responsibilities of the governors
Standards: Ensuring an organised and systematic approach to promoting high standards of educational achievement.
Targets: Setting appropriate targets for pupil’s achievements.
Curriculum: Ensuring that the balanced and broadly based and that the national curriculum and religious education are taught.
Policies: Deciding how in organised terms how the school should be run.
Reporting results: Reporting on assessments and examination results.
Finance: Deciding how to spend the budget allocated to the school.
Staffing: Deciding the number of staff, making decisions on staff pay and pay policy.
Appointments: Agreeing procedures for staff and discipline.
Discipline: Agreeing procedures for staff and discipline
Inspection follow up: Ensuring actions identified by the inspection are incorporated in the school improvement plan.
The governing body has the opportunity to delegate a wide range of responsibility to the head teacher including staff appoints and all staff dismissals excluding the head.
