Capital punishment is the politically correct way to say the execution of a human being - the legal taking of one’s life, as decided by a judge and a jury. I am here to argue that the death penalty should be replaced by life in prison without possibility of parole. The death penalty is immoral, inequitably applied, incredibly expensive, and an ineffective deterrent.
Ask Cameron Todd Willingham what he thinks about the death penalty – that is, if you still could. This former father of three woke up one morning in his Texas home to an inferno. Fire consumed his house, as well as the lives of his three baby girls. He broke a window to escape, then made several attempts to get back into the house to save his children, but it was too hot, the flames too intense to allow him back inside. The state’s primary case against him was based on the forensic testimony of arson investigators who relied on theories that experts and scientists have since universally discredited. David Grann, a journalist who investigated the story for The New Yorker, stated in a recent interview with NPR that a “…leading scientist and arson investigators in the country came in and looked at this case. And they concluded that the original arson investigators had based all their conclusions on what was essentially folklore and discredited forensic evidence…that it was, what one of the lead investigators in the country called, essentially witchcraft …and…in fact all the indicators in the Willingham case had no scientific bases.” He quoted one of the top scientists in the country as concluding that “…there was no rational basis for what the original arson investigators relied upon and….that their method was characteristic of psychics and mystics.” Yet in spite of this new evidence and numerous appeals and pleas for clemency, Cameron Todd Willingham was put to death in Texas for a crime most people believe he did not commit.
