There are so many different kinds of Influences that cause accidents that are labeled as DUI. Thinking about DUI, the first things that come to your mind are most likely drugs and/or drinking. But did you know, that there is another kind of influence that has as much of a negative effect as drugs or drinking? It is sleepiness.
I remember the day so clearly. It is a memory that will never fade from my mind. July 17, 2005. It was 7am and my sister and I were startled awake by our mother. She hurried us into the kitchen where my other sister and my father were waiting. My parents then told us that my brother had been in a terrible car accident in Virginia.
He was driving to Florida to surprise his (then) fiancé while she was visiting her family. On the drive down, at 6 am in Virginia, he fell asleep at the wheel. He ended up crashing more than ¾ of his car under a tractor trailer that was stopped along the shoulder. For weeks and months, my brother underwent numerous surgeries and painful procedures.
He now has a steel elbow and many serious and painful back problems. Because of these problems, he was prescribed countless pain medications that all held serious risks of dependencies. He fell subject to these dependencies.
A simple, yet stupid decision on my brother’s behalf turned his life upside down. For someone to decide to drive after only a “few” drinks could have the same effect as someone who decides that driving while stoned has no impairment on their judgment. These, in turn, have the same effect as someone who decides that if they open their window while driving, the fresh bursts of air will keep them awake, as if the air is a magical caffeine boost. These causes, though all different when looked at for face value, have the same effects on any person, no matter what age. The same effects; crash, injury, pain, addiction, and even death.
