The Change to DTV
Congress is forcing all televisions sets to broadcast in only in digital starting on February 17th, 2009 (FCC).   Although this topic has been upon debate for the past couple of years, it is still a shock to many that analog run televisions will not work anymore.   Senior citizens, in addition to the low income families are most worried because they have no way of changing their television set either due to the lack of money, immobility, or technological knowledge. While their worries are valid, the government is attempting to make this transition as easy and painless as possible. Providing financial help in forms of coupons to help with the cost of converter boxes is one way they are dealing with it. Although this change might seem as a nuisance to many, it will benefit us in the long run in terms of quality, efficiency and even safety. The question is could this be the wrong time to do this considering the environmental issues?
As with any transition, changing from analog TV to digital TV can be difficult, but beneficial. The matter of the subject on everyone’s mind is Why? Why put everyone through a hassle? Well, to get that answer, we need to know the facts. What is DTV? As the DTV.gov website states, “Digital Television (DTV) is an advanced broadcasting technology that will transform your television viewing experience”, it offers us television with better picture and sound quality in addition to multiple programming choices, called multicasting, and interactive capabilities. When buying a digital television now, chances are that it will also be a High Definition (HD) TV, which is another positive outcome of DTV. “Digital pictures will be free from the "ghosts" and "snow" that can affect analog transmissions” (What is DTV?). As well as DTV being advantageous to the viewers in terms of quality, it will also free up the airwaves for public and safety service, such as the police, fire, and emergency rescue communications and allow for advanced...
