Why do we have to know the Old Testament?
We, as Christians, have a responsibility to know our past and what God has taught mankind. To do this, we must know and become familiar with the stories of the Old Testament such as the biblical flood or the story of our creation. These stories can help us learn about mistakes made by mankind in the past and about how our religion began.
Knowing our past or how our religion began is imperative in order to call ourselves Christian. We cannot be called Christians if we do not know what we stand for. The Old Testament provides us with stories explaining the rich history of the relationship between mankind and God. This relationship is taught throughout the stories of the Old Testament. As Christians, we must learn our history with God in order to know what God expects of us. Christians have to know the Old Testament in order to know how we, as a species, began. The story of our creation is the very first story written down in Genesis chapter 1. This story makes us aware that God is our creator and that He is responsible for the existence of all life on earth. The history of mankind told in the Old Testament is very important for both Christians and any other religion that accepts God as their sole creator.
The lessons taught in the Old Testament provide us with an understanding of how God has interacted with us and what He expects of us. Stories like the Biblical Flood can teach us that we must always respect and listen to God. It teaches us that we, as Christians, must trust God and follow His teachings. We can learn from almost every story in the Old Testament. The story of the Ten Commandments teaches us the rules we must all follow. It teaches us that we must love God above all else and to treat other with love and respect. As Catholics, these teaching are the roots of our religion. Therefore, The Old Testament teaches us how to be good Catholics and how we should act in this world.
