Circus through a child’s eyes…
When I was a young girl, every year the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey circus trains would always park across the street in front of our house. I remember when the trains started coming up the track they would move in so slowly and seemed to go on forever. The silver trains illuminated our whole street in silver with big red letters that said Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus. Watching the animals being unloaded was always amazing to see; being we lived in the city. We would always go across the street to sit on the wooded docks just to watch them all unload from the train. Not a lot of people around the world were able to really meet the performers as much as me and my sister; Donella did.
Circus people were always fun to be around it was like having a family you seen once a year. Every year we would stand on the dock and wave at the trains as they pulled in. The sound of the whistle and the steam from the train was always so loud we would put our fingers in our ears trying to block some of the volume. Once the steam engine stopped it became very silent as we all sat there in anticipation for one person to   exit the train. As they exited from the train we would all applaud at them welcoming to our neighborhood in Binghamton, N.Y. They would usually come over to greet us while the stage hands would take care of the animals. The first day they arrived they were usually busy setting up their practice nets and fences. We were able to play with the younger children while their parents and older children were setting up.   In the afternoon, of their first day of their arrival they would plan a circus parade so the animals could walk to the arena. This would give the animals exercise after their long journey on the train.
