Human reproduction cloning is unacceptable and should not be pursued in today’s society. Human cloning is an unnatural act that jeopardizes the integrity of our species by devaluing human life by turning human beings into products, not gifts of life. In this essay I will examine and analyze the arguments for and against human cloning in order to prove that the negative repercussions of human cloning severely outweigh the positive advantages. In arguing against human cloning, this essay will begin by introducing background knowledge on the topic and also by outlining the main health risks from the mutation of genes, the emotional risks attached to clones entering the world, the risk of the possible abuses of technology for cloning humans, and the ultimate moral question of, if we begin cloning, will it be the end of the individual? Also we must understand that if clones were to be created and brought into this world, we would have no idea as to the future consequences of creating clones. “Always consider what the consequences were likely to be in the seventh generation.” (Patricia Baird, 344)
Cloning is the production of multiple, identical offspring. A clone is an animal, which is genetically identical to its donor "parent". We now know that this can be achieved using cells derived from an embryo, a fetus, or from an adult animal. Cloning from adult animals was introduced to the public in 1997 when scientists announced the birth of Dolly, the first animal cloned in this way. There have now been hundreds of clones produced from skin cells taken from adult sheep, cattle, goats, pigs and mice. The real key to cloning an adult animal is the ability to reprogram the skin cell nucleus and cause it to begin developing as if it was a newly fertilized egg.
