Effective communication is defined as a two-way process - sending the right message, which is also being correctly received and understood by the other person(s). This sounds so simple right? The reality is that most people struggle with this task, including myself.   I don’t profess to be the most eloquent communicator, but I do feel that a majority of the time I am rather effective at conveying my messages.   One of the biggest challenges I face with communication however, is when I am tasked to speak in front of large groups of people at work.   I was recently given the responsibility of training new employees on how to use our expense reporting system.   When I am one on one or in a smaller group of people, I do great! I have well thought out sentences that make sense and people can comprehend what I am saying.   If you place me in front of a large group of people, I suddenly find myself sounding like Foghorn Leghorn from Looney Tunes with the "I Say! I Say! I tell you what there, Boy!" stutter.   It is amazing to me how I play out what I am going to say in my head and it sounds great, but the reality is that when the words actually come out of my mouth, it is a different story.   What I am saying actually makes sense, but I know that the message is not being interpreted properly because I find myself back tracking and adding to what I have said which is confusing my audience based on the multiple questions and sometimes blank stares on their faces.   To makes matters worse, my audience consists of employees from several foreign countries and the language barriers also impede the communication process.   It is a challenge for me to find common ground and speak in such a way that everyone can understand.   It’s almost as if I need an interpreter. This is an area that I need to improve on because work relationships can and will be impacted by the lack of understanding on both sides and of course nothing positive can come from this.
