Helen Keller
(1880-1968)

Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama.   Helen Keller was the first of two daughters to be born.   Keller also had two older step brothers.   Keller’s mom left her when she was born.   Keller’s dad proudly served in the confederate army during the Civil War.   The Keller family was not very wealthy, and usually earned income from their cotton plantation.   Keller was a smart baby; she started speaking at 6months of age, and could communicate and walk at 1 year of age.   However, sadly in 1882 Helen had an illness, the doctor called it “brain fever” that produced a high body temperature.   After a few days have passed the fever was more noticeable.   Helens mother started to notice that Helen didn’t show any signs or reaction when somebody talked to her, or when someone made a movement she had no reaction.
