My chromosomal disorder that I chose to research is cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a life threatening disease. It is an inherited disorder meaning you get it from your parents. It’s not contagious and you can’t catch it from a friend. It is one of the most popular chronic lung diseases among children. Cystic fibrosis is caused by a defective gene. It can produce serious lung infections or digestive problems. In people that have cystic fibrosis, their bodies produce mucus that's extremely thick and sticky. The mucus is thicker than normal peoples. CF affects cells in the epithelium cells, which are the layers of cells that line the passages in the body's organs. In a person who does not have this disease their cells produce thin, watery mucus. However, in someone with cystic fibrosis the thicker mucus doesn't move as easily and it clogs passages in many of the body's organs and causes infections. Most children are diagnosed by age two. In the earlier years most children wouldn’t even make it to elementary school due to the limited medical knowledge we possessed. Now, many people living with cystic fibrosis are averaged to live until their late 30s. Cystic fibrosis is located on the 7th chromosome. It is inherited by two mutated CFTR genes, one from each parent. Some symptoms may include delayed growth such as failure to gain weight as a child. In newborns you may experience no bowel movement in first 48 hours of life and/or salty tasting skin. In the toddler years you may witness stomach pain from being severely constipated, bloating, loss of appetite and floating clay colored feces. Reoccurring episodes of pneumonia are very common in children with CF. Infertility is also a major concern in older men along with pancreatitis.   | Cystic fibrosis affects nearly 30,000 people in the United States and 70,000 worldwide.
