People have speculated about the meaning of life since the dawn of time. Philosophers such as Plato, Socrates and Descartes wondered about the universe. They wanted to gain an understanding of the essential nature of human beings and how we should live. In his meditations Descartes wanted to prove what counts as genuine knowledge. Psychologists have sought for their discipline to be seen as a science just like biology, physics and chemistry; they have done this by making their results from experiments quantitatively measurable which philosophers did not do. Wilhelm Wundt was the first to split philosophy and psychology apart by conducting the first ever experiment in his laboratory in 1879. From that experiment, psychologists all over the world have carried out experiments and have contributed to what we know of psychology today as a science. They wanted to eradicate any grey areas that philosophy had and make behaviours distinctly black and white. These people have dedicated their lives into investigating animal and human behaviours alike to form solid explanations. In Lauren Slater’s Opening Skinner’s Box: Great Psychological Experiments of the Twentieth Century, she goes through ten of the most influential and controversial experiments carried out by some of psychology’s most innovative thinkers. Some have raised ethical issues but nonetheless they have all given us some very good explanations of behaviours- good and bad. Slater chooses experiments that investigate a variety of topics such as free will, conformity/obedience, the ethics of experimentation on humans and what she calls “the perceptual inadequacy and inevitable imminence of the human condition”. Slater intertwines the academic experiments with a personal narrative and actually recreates some of these experiments herself which brings another interesting element to the book.
