Deconstruction is a theory which is popular used in contemporary design field, such as fine arts, music, architecture design and fashion design.
This essay intends to identify and analyses the link between deconstruction theory and fashion style, showing how the idea filtered into the work of specific deconstruction fashion designers.
What is the philosophy deconstruction?
Amy Spindler defined "deconstructionism" in the following manner: "ORIGINS: The term first described a movement in literary analysis in the mid-20th century, founded by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida. It was a backlash against staid literary analysis, arguing that no work can have a fixed meaning, based on the complexity of language and usage" (my emphasis, Spindler 1993: 1).
"The Oxford English Dictionary defines deconstruction as 'the action of undoing the construction of a thing.'
The Deconstruction in fashion means liberating the garment from functionality, by literally undoing it. For example, jacket linings can be on the outside and sleeves can be detached. (Spindler 1993: 1).
Why we need deconstruction fashion?
"Fashion" is a modernist system which is made up of "new looks". The aim of fashion system is to hunt for the new. Before deconstruction fashion appearance the old fashion is always copy the old style clothes. The cycle of fashion is very boring.
“Deconstruction fashion has always been characterized by a critical nuance, as it tends to revolt against fashion in its most oppressive and glamorous form. However, it does not simply aim at replacing the old fashion parameters it tries to dismantle with new ones. What it does, in fact, is working for disclosing and showing other possibilities.”
“These designers work represents in fact a reaction to and a critical reflection on traditional tailoring methods and paragons of body consciousness”
