For this assignment on how to develop reading skills from the internet I decided to check out the site http://school.familyeducation.com/reading/cognitive-development/38329.html which is a site that gives you 10 ways on the exact subject. So for this assignment I’ll be going over what I’ve learnt from these 10 ways.
One of the ways on how to improve your reading skills it talks about how parents should set aside a regular time every day to read to or with their children regardless of whether they are a preschooler or preteen, it’ll help them develop the habit of wanting to read independently. Another way to develop or improve reading skills is to surround your children or family members with reading material. By always having books or magazines around that fit a certain persons reading level, it could encourage someone to stop and pick one up and start reading it. Another way I found interesting to improving reading skills is to pretty much get your children involved with reading even when you’re not at home and books or magazines aren’t present. For instance, if your out to eat have your child read some of the menu to you or if you’re on a road trip or just out and about in a car have them read some of the road signs just to keep their minds going.
The library is a very big help as well. There is always a wide variety of material at the library that everyone can find interest in from books to magazines. So getting a library card would be the best bet to improve your reading skills. That and this site suggest that you should encourage you to read books that may not appeal directly to you and you could find out that you may take interest in something you did not know. Also this site suggest providing other sources of reading activities that will help increase your children’s reading skills such as; books on tape, computer programs, textbooks and other reading materials.
