Individualism gives a person an identity, a sense of who one is. It gives one choices and allows one to be unique. Unfortunately, not everyone is lucky to experience all of those features. The world in its present state is still very much male-dominated. Women’s repression and discrimination is clearly evident in many fields of life. “The Second Sex” by Simone de Beauvoir and the “Dialectic of Sex” by Shulamith Firestone both discuss in details the oppression of women. Both authors describe the origins of the existing issues in different ways and propose possible ways of solving the problem. Firestone believes that the reason for women’s oppression is biology. In contrast, Simone de Beauvoir blames the society and cultures. Both authors show their own perspective at the issue and stand for making changes that would bring the equality between sexes.
            At present, women still have to face a lot of obstacles. Even though many people believe that the problem of women does not exist anymore, since women can go to work and be a part of a public life, the truth is that women are still struggling to get total rights and equality. People are still interested and they can see that there is more to do about the issue. Discrimination is very visible in regular life. In business fields, major companies are led by men. In politics, the most important positions are held by male representatives and women candidates for president are very rare. Women also get lower wages for the same labor as men do. Workplaces are highly divided among genders. Being a successful woman in present days is much more challenging than for men. As it is visible, society does not created full equality yet.   Women have to prove that they are able to do something while men held those positions for much longer time so they do not have to demonstrate anything.
