“Happy birthday Malachi” yelled all the children as they sat around the long table filled with presents, food, and drinks. Malachi smiled big as he looked over the crowd anxious to get to his favorite race car game that waited for him. Soon after the thumping sound of the birthday song that blazed in the background was over Malachi leaped out of the chair straight over to his favorite game. As he inserted two shiny gold coins into the thin slot he jumped high into the driver seat and gripped his sweaty palms against the small steering wheel. The screen lit up flashing lights of yellows, blues, reds, and greens as he heard the announcement to start your engines. The countdown began, 3, 2, 1, take off! Just in the mist of crossing lap 3 his aunt rushed over and planted a big, wet, sloppy kiss on him. “Happy birthday little man” she exclaimed. As he turned to acknowledge his aunt, he saw that she was holding a huge gift box covered in Superman wrapping paper, topped with a big blue bow. So excited about his gift he had realized that he had forgotten all about his game. As he turned back to the bright screen that lit up like a firework in the sky, he realized that he had finished the race in last place. Bummed out, Malachi slouched down into the hard plastic seat, looked up at the ceiling full with balloons and streamers and let out a big sigh. “Awe man” he said quietly.

Just then he remembered the gift his aunt had been holding. He quickly ran over to his mother jumping up and down. “Can I open it, can I open it?” he asked eagerly. “Okay” mom said as she began to gather all the children around into a circle on the floor where there sat a huge pile of presents. As Malachi sat anxiously watching the clock as if the minutes had turned into hours, he scanned over the sea of boxes, gift bags, and wrapping paper fixing his eyes on the present that he had seen his aunt bring in. “Okay Malachi, which one do you want to open first?” asked his dad. As if that was the magic...
