ABSTRACT

Drug addiction is a disease because “the illness can be described, the course of the illness is predictable and progressive, the disease is primary – that is, it is not just a symptom of some other underlying disorder, it is permanent and it is terminal if left untreated, it results in insanity or premature death”. Medical advances offer great insight on the biochemistry of the human brain and how it molds our behaviors that affect drug addiction. There are skeptics and those who oppose the “disease concept” (that drug addiction is a disease). These skeptics argue that the “disease concept” comforts addicts to believe that their addiction is out of their control. However there are many treatment styles including medication and behavioral therapy, alone or in combination and there are acknowledged key principles have been recognized in effective treatment programs.

Drug addiction is a chronic disease. Addiction and dependency on drugs was once viewed as an ethical issue but as medical information and technology increases we learn the facts about addiction. It is the stigma associated with drug abuse that prevents people to get treatment, prevents doctors from treating addicts and prevents pharmaceutical companies form developing and researching new treatments for addicts (NIDA, 2008). Doctors and other health care professionals have recognized that “chemical dependency is a disease, which responds to treatment” (Solutions Outpatient Services, 2008).   The American Medical Association has given credit to the “disease concept” towards addiction since the 1950’s because: “the illness can be described, the course of the illness is predictable and progressive, the disease is primary – that is, it is not just a symptom of some other underlying disorder, it is permanent and it is terminal if left untreated, it results in insanity or premature death” (Solutions Outpatient Services, 2008).
