Narcotics are certainly a problem for modern day Ireland. The availability of drugs is now unbelievable, with every teenager having access to them easily. Nowadays everybody can get drugs everywhere, from your local pub to churches. Even though many people do not know it, the drug problem is right on Ireland doorstep! With drug seizures appearing on the newspapers everyday I find it unbelievable that the government has not acted immediately. It is certainly a national disgrace!
Drug culture in Ireland has become very common. Nowadays juveniles think is cool and trendy to inject heroin, sniff cocaine or smoke cannabis. Even with the death of their idols (like Katy French in July 2007) they continue to abuse drugs. I think this is because of lack of knowledge on the subject. If the government educated the teenagers of Ireland the dangers of drug abuse, maybe the fatalities from drug abuse would drop significantly.
The flow of drugs into Ireland is also unbelievable. With Ireland filled with drugs, the price is dropping rapidly. A report shows that a kilo of cocaine costed one hundred and seventy thousand euro in 2000 but now with so many drugs available that has dropped to only seventy thousand euro. This means nearly every teenager can afford drugs with their pocket money. With the recent drug raids in Dublin by police and seizures by the Coast Guard the price rises again, but the government must continue to fight to get rid of the drug problem.
I truly believe that the solution to this problem lies with the government. If they do not act, more and more people will die. It is certainly very sad that these people have to die to enable the Government to act. However, they are very close to the solution and I hope that when I'm older and have children, it is no longer a drug problem in Ireland
