Same-sex marriage in Maine is currently unrecognized.   A bill to allow same-sex marriages was passed on May 6, 2011 but opponents quickly petitioned for a referendum on the issue, putting the law on hold before it went into effect.   Ultimately the law was overturned on November 3, 2009 (Wikipedia).   I am a gay-rights activist and was unfortunately not legally able to vote on the issue due to my criminal record.   I am repeatedly shocked by our states and countries outright ignorance and intolerance.   This is an issue that I believe will keep resurfacing until more people become educated about what we are really trying to do, which is to allow homosexuals the equal right to be married as that of heterosexuals.   I feel like a lot of people have a serious misconception that we are trying to force the gay lifestyle into our public schools and force others to agree with the way we live.   I believe this kind of misinformation is exactly why the majority of people continue to oppose passing the law to allow same-sex couples to be married.   There would be major economic benefits to legalizing same-sex marriage, but for some reason the opponents of this law have their blinders on when it comes to recognizing any positive aspect of the issue, even those that would be in their favor.
A large majority of people in the United States will say that they are in favor of equal rights for homosexuals. They will all agree that homosexuals should have the same rights in housing, jobs, public accommodations, and should have equal access to government benefits, equal protection of the law, and other rights granted to US citizens. However, when the topic of marriage arises, all the talk of equality ceases. Over fifty percent of all people in the United States oppose homosexual marriage, despite the fact that most are otherwise supportive of homosexual rights (Jones, 2009).   This means that many of the same people who are even passionately in favor of homosexual rights oppose homosexuals...
