Explain how the USA moved from a position of isolationism and neutrality in the 1930s to declare war on the Axis powers in 1941.

There has always been a strong isolationist streak in the American political psyche. This was due to the separation of the country by two great oceans, a separation that had existed ever since the War of Independence. From the very beginning of the Republic of the United States, President Washington warned of the danger of entangling foreign alliances. This is interesting though as President Adams ruined his chance of re-election by deciding to keep the USA out of the Napoleonic Wars. President Jefferson had the same problem when he decided to cut trade with Europe in order to keep the country out of the very same war. Finally, under President Madison, the United States entered the war with catastrophic consequences.
After World War I and the disastrous number of dead Americans, there was a very strong isolationist feeling within the United States. This was intensified with the Depression of the 1930s and the focus on domestic issues. The greatest calamity to befall the American in the twentieth century was the Great Depression – a worse calamity than even the two World Wars. The Depression began with the Wall Street stock market crash in October 1929.Soon businesses were going under and the American people were losing their jobs at a terrifying rate. Every single American was affected. Eventually about one third of all wage-earners were unemployed and many who kept their jobs saw their earnings fall. President Hoover, who had engineered a humanitarian miracle in Europe during World War I, was unable to break away from the mind-set that the Government should not intervene with the economy in an attempt to revitalise it. President Roosevelt was elected by a landslide majority in 1932. He brought emery and new ideas to Washington and the Federal Government initiated programs that would have been rejected out of hand only a few years...
