Women’s rights and racial equalities once sounded like extreme ideas that not many people favored.   Black men and women were once unequal to white men and did not have nearly as many privileges or benefits. Gay marriage is similar to these other issues in that they were all at one point discriminated against. Saying that gay people or couples are unfit to raise children and that marriage in today’s society is about a man and a woman, not a couple in love, is unwarranted. People should realize that segregating gay marriage from conventional marriage and not providing equal rights and privileges is disrespectful and discriminatory.
One main argument against same-sex marriage is that the traditional definition of marriage itself is “the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law” . The main point being that marriage involves a man and a woman and that is how it has always been and how it should stay.   Many years ago marriage was strictly for economic and diplomatic reasons not involving love or many other ideas many would involve marriage with today. Many have heard the story of Romeo and Juliet, a young couple sneaking away from their families and Juliet’s predetermined marriage to marry each other, their true love. Women were also married to be used somewhat as maids and were not entitled to any of their spouse’s belongings or choices in event of his death. Marriage and its meaning has evolved over the years into something that people acknowledge as a couple being in love and becoming a family.   “As we have evolved a new and higher regard for women than was true for Paul in his time, so we are evolving a new regard for same-sex attraction than was true for Paul, and for most of us, in both his time and our own.
