To those of the church of Antioch,
My apostolic authority being fully credentialed will give the proclamation that those who promise are descendants not those who just abide by the law.
On my sailing back here Antioch I must confront the teachings of certain Jewish Christians. According to the Judaizers, those from Judea, you cannot be saved unless you are circumcised. They are proclaiming that a Gentile cannot become a descendant of Abraham or a full member of the family of God unless this procedure is done. This fear of circumcision among the Gentiles should not be forcefully put upon them. Take Cephas for instance, he ate with people who were not Jewish until some men James had sent arrived. Then Cephas drew back and would not associate with people who were not Jewish. He was afraid of those who insisted that circumcision was necessary.
Titus came along with me and Barnabas to Jerusalem. With having Titus with me, and although he is Greek, no one forced him to be circumcised. How can you Jews live like a Gentile and compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? With that being said a person is not justified by the physical procedure of circumcision but through faith in Christ. It is necessary for one to believe in Jesus in order to be saved, but it is not necessary to be circumcised. A Gentile who obeys is better than a Jew who disobeys despite their physical circumcision. One’s physical obedience of the law does not result in salvation. If a person is Jewish only in physical terms, but not in the heart, he/she is not one of God’s people. The circumcised and the uncircumcised shall both be judged the same way through faith. I am not forbidding the Jewish act but am sending a proclamation to Gentiles that is not a requirement.
It is said to be believed by the Judaizers that Abraham God directed Abraham to be circumcised leading the Jews to believe that all must be circumcised in order to be considered a descendant. However, Abraham was given a promise...
