Regulating the Homeschooled System

Homeschooling is a growing trend in the United States today with nearly one and a half million children being homeschooled (Dube). Parents who homeschool do for various reasons, such as religious beliefs, unhappiness with the public or private school district, and a sense that they can teach their child or children the best. State regulations are at a very low minimal for those who homeschool and have limited requirements for the parent who is doing the teaching. What it comes down to is that the state regulates the laws, and federal control of homeschooling does not exist. Federal courts have never granted parents the right to homeschool. State regulations regarding home-schooling requirements put home-schooled children at a disadvantage of receiving a quality education when compared to children who attend public or private schools.  
The issue of too homeschool or not to homeschool is an important issue today amongst teachers, parents, school districts and students themselves. Many of us are against the “homeschooling,” “teaching at home” and “home education” as we call them. It is not an issue of us “not getting” their kind of system, it is an issue of the “low quality” of regulation within the homeschooling system. Keep in mind that some states have few regulations, some have no regulations and some have moderate regulations. According to the Home School Legal Defense Association, students who are homeschooled are required to have only nine hundred hours per year of instruction and parents lack time needed to educate. With no control over homeschooling, states give the parents the right to authority and the right to decide what subjects to teach. Parents may decide how many hours a day they will spend teaching or not teaching, and what curriculum they will use.
