Immigration is considered a serious issue in the United States today. Opinions of U.S citizens on immigration are divided. Although there is a division in personal opinion, the Washington Post/ ABC poll mentioned above suggested that a majority of Americans do not think that sending illegal immigrants home or punishing them will solve the problem of illegal immigration, and a more comprehensive solution requiring further understanding of the situation is needed.

The Census Bureau estimates the US population will grow from 281 million in 2000 to 397 million
in 2050 with the expected rate of immigration, but only to 328 million with zero immigration. "If we have zero immigration with today's low birthrates the American population would eventually begin to shrink. The Pew Research Center, a fact tank, states that there will be a population increase of 142 million between 2005 and 2050.

Supporters of the rights of immigrants argue that they are mostly law-abiding and essential to the American economy and are being wrongly stereotyped as dangerous and potentially violent. They also argue that immigration lead to added productivity and lower costs for goods and services in the US. A US National Research Council report showed that overall, immigration was a net economic gain due to increase in pay for higher skilled workers and lower prices for goods and services provided by immigrant workers and more efficiency. A New Americans report found that low-skill low wage immigration does not; lower the wages of most domestic workers.

Those against say the number of immigrants should be restricted because they take away jobs from American citizens. They want to see illegal immigrants expelled and want existing laws, which are designed to keep out new migrants, effectively enforced.
