A 15-year-old boy who is captain of the school's basketball team has a secret passion for acting. His friends think it's nerdy, but the boy continues and even lands the lead role in his high school's musical. A teen girl, who is tired of the same old trends, dares to wear a funky outfit to school. For once, it does not consist of skinny jeans, UGGS, or a Hollister shirt. All of her friends question her about what she's wearing, but she just smiles and feels confident about her look. The boy and girl both have something in common: they both show signs of individuality.
    Being an individual is easy to want, but hard to achieve. Nowadays, teens want to fit in not stand out. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines individuality as “a total character peculiar to and distinguishing an individual from others.” Not very many people want to be labeled as “peculiar”. Individuality is an amazing virtue: however, it can be attained by loving who you are while you achieve it. When I was in the 5th grade, I went to school with a girl who lived a couple doors down from me. Even though I saw her almost everyday while we waited at the bus stop, she was never really my friend. At school she was known as a little weird because of the way she talked and acted. She wasn't afraid to say or do what was on her mind. One day, at the bus stop she put her book bag down, went into the neighbors lawn, and began twirling around in circles. I watched her for a few seconds before asking her what she was doing. “I'm living my life!” she responded happily. I tried to ignore her and asked her to stop because the bus was coming. She stopped twirling and stared at me for a moment before asking, “Why do you care so much what other people think of you?” I could;t think of a response-- I just stood there. Sally taught me that it was okay to be a little “weird”. She enjoyed life more than most people I know.
