Gravity Probe B launched successfully
Scientists eager to determine if Einstein was right
NASA’s Gravity Probe B (GP-B) space vehicle, built, integrated and tested by Lockheed Martin, roared into space in April, beginning a 16-month mission that will attempt to verify two subtle physical effects predicted by Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. GP-B is expected to begin science operations early this summer. The launch, from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, was the culmination of nearly two decades of research, development and production for the GP-B team. “It was enormously satisfying to see GP-B launched,” said Bill Reeve, Space Systems Company GP-B program manager. “Hundreds of people at Space Systems have been a part of this program since our first contracts in 1985 to build the dewar and the flight probe, and it’s a great pleasure to see it all working so well as we calibrate the spacecraft and get it ready to begin science operations.” The GP-B space vehicle comprises the spacecraft, built by Lockheed Martin, and its payload. The payload is made up of the dewar, the key structural component around which the GP-B space vehicle was built, and the flight probe, a nine-foot-long cigar-shaped vacuum chamber.
