During the progressive era, there was tension between urban and rural life. Tension derived from immigrants migrating to America to take the factory jobs and drive down wages for the working class Americans. In response to improving impoverished urban life, places like Hull House, developed by Jane Addams, were established. Hull House became a social, educational, and artistic center for the working class in Chicago. It was places like Hull House that incited social reform to help unify the urban and rural populations. Jane Addams was crucial in relieving this conflict between the urban and rural populations through her philanthropic work in Hull house.   “Over the years Jane Addams built a bridge between the immigrants and the old-stock americans, between the working class and the immigrants, between amateur reformers and professional politicians, even between private philanthropy and government.”(xii)
During this era, one of the factors that contributed to tension between the rural and urban people was the rural people’s disposition about the immigrants that have entered the work force. The movement that is identified with this tension is called the Nativist movement. Nativism was established by the “true Americans,” who were largely rural dwellers, and can be considered and anti-immigration movement. Nativism is the opposition of immigration or any other attempt to lower the social status. This movement was a protest of the “new immigrants” which were primarily Russian Jews and the Italian Catholics. But because the immigrants were coming in and taking all of the jobs for a lower wage then the wages Americans previously enjoyed, movements similar to the populist movement were created in order to “take back the country” and be rid of the urban lifestyle. Americans resented the immigrants for taking their jobs and believed that the immigrants were ruining the American reputation by lowering the standard of living.   WASP was a name given to the White Anglo-Saxon...
