The studies made by scientists and family planners are that, overall, the possibility of divorce after living together is more than 80%, which is a very high number. In other words, the people who are living together before marriage are twice as probable to get divorced than who didn’t lived together. (American Sociological Review, 1988, Vol 53: 127-138) However they also stated that the risk of divorce is even higher if you don’t live together more than three years before marriage. Therefore, the longer you live together before marriage, the less the possibility of getting divorced.
Living together before marriage is considered a stepping stone for the future. Although it is completely concerned with the couples, the society itself has a great influence to it. Depending on the society the lifespan of relationship between couples who are living together are varied. For example: In Western societies, where a person has more freedom, have more divorce than Asian society. In Asia, family is considered most important to a person’s life, which they value most. In addition, most Asian cultures, couples do not tend to live before marriage. However, people are agreeing that living together before marriage is stage that all couple should do before totally committed.
In most cases, scientists are suggesting not to live together before marriage. They are proving themselves with three solid facts. Higher divorce rate, lower quality of life, and it doesn’t really lead to marriage. According to www.rayfowler.org, the number of unmarried couples living together has risen from 430,000 in 1960 to 5.4 million in 2005. Furthermore, more than eight out of ten couples who live together will break up either before the wedding or afterwards in divorce. About 45 percent of those who begin cohabiting do not marry. Another 5-10 percent continues living together and do not marry. Couples who do marry after living together are 50% more likely to divorce than those who did not.
