Problematizing Graded FinalThe Lottery: Good or Bad?
The lottery is in most every state, but why not all? What do some states see that others don’t? The lottery brings good and bad, but most of the bad comes from people not being able to control themselves. Also in some of my personal experiences great upper class communities have become run down and gross. Can the lottery become something that is more sophisticated and elegant? But not everything that comes from the lottery is a bad thing, schools get funded scholarships are given out, roads are paid for, these are just a few examples. Should everyone be “punished” for their mistakes or for what others believe in? Do the positives of having a lottery outweigh the negatives?
Every state complains about not having enough money, so why is the lottery not in every state? It is a money maker. A portion of every ticket bought goes directly to your state. Why are we turning away money that people are willing to spend? Since there is no gambling/ lottery available to those in our community, people that live here are traveling to nearby states just to gamble away their money. I mean how often do you hear of people in our area going to Nevada, Mesquite or even Wendover for the weekend? Our money that should be staying in our state is leaving.
The money that is made from having a lottery goes to many great causes around the state, from road construction, sponsoring businesses to scholarships. Money to go to college is always a big issue for everyone, let’s face it college is expensive. The lottery has come up with a way to ease the burden on many families that maybe otherwise wouldn’t have been able to send their child to college. I have family that lives in New Mexico and I almost moved down there when I heard that if you maintain a B average in their high school, they pay for your college. If they don’t pay for all of it it’s at least a good portion. This alone seems to be worth it to me. Furthering education for...
