Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday October 6th 2011 bidding for Palestine's full statehood in the United Nations. As President Mahmoud Abbas had said last month in New York, “The time is now for Palestinian Spring, the time for independence.” It is in Strasbourg where he now further ask for support to achieve this. He started his speech by bringing up the fact that it has been eighteen years since the signing of the Oslo Agreement to establish Palestine as an independent state with security and peace. That peace agreement was supposed to culminate by May 5 1999, so he now poses the question, “How much longer must they (Palestine) wait?”
President Abbas went on to describe the advancements in the negotiations Palestine has made with other parties. Even though they have made advances in fulfilling negotiations he admits there are some negotiations he will not fulfill, mostly due to their differences with the the ever-changing Israeli government. He explained that in the peace program they fully embrace the the two-state solution but the demand that Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state is an “unacceptable precondition”. He states that this is solely because, “there is a danger that it will turn the conflict... in our region into a destructive religious conflict.”
After rejecting those terms of negotiation Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas still pleaded for statehood by the release of the grip of its occupying power. He then went into further detail about why there is discontent within the Palestinian population due to the occupying power. He says the occupying power in Palestine has imposed the intense blockade on the Gaza Strip which resulted in a mass destruction and many deaths, a systematic policy of ethnic cleansing which included “demolition of houses, displacement of populations and withdrawal of identity documents,” and incursions in areas of the Palestinian National Authority...
