Managers and Organizational Culture
Managers are huge contributors to Organizational Culture. To truly understand this concept, you first must know what organizational culture is. According to Wikipedia, Organizational culture is an idea in the field of Organizational studies and management which describes the psychology, attitudes, experiences, beliefs and Vvalues (personal and cultural values) of an organization. It has been defined as "the specific collection of values and norms that are shared by people and groups in an organization and that control the way they interact with each other and with stakeholders outside the organization" (Wikipedia, 2009).
In reading through the first three chapters of Contemporary Management, I realized how much the organizational culture of my present organization has been influenced by its founders.   Our organization is a small for profit acute care hospital. It has only been in existence since December of 2007 when we opened our doors to the public. It is the dream of a couple of local physicians that were very discouraged working at the local hospital in our town. The “other hospital” in our small town had been around since 1962. The CEO or President was a truly good business man keeping up with the times and changes in healthcare and instituted hospital owned physicians to the community. The hospital bought a majority of the areas independent physicians’ practices. Set them up in hospital owned offices, hired and paid their office staff, paid the physicians malpractice insurance and paid the physician a yearly salary. All of this eliminated the physician’s overhead. Bonuses were also available to the physician if they superseded the number of patients seen in the offices, number of tests ordered and how quickly they could get a patient out of the hospital therefore making more money for the hospital in the long run.
