Since the dawn of the “war on drugs” many controversial issues have been brought into public opinion. One could argue that the legalization of medical marijuana is at the top of list when debating on this issue. Most citizens would agree that there are legitimate medical uses of the drug. Our government, however, relies on old data when deciding on how to view the drug. This paper will examine new findings on the use and abuse of marijuana. It will also take a look at the statistical data behind the theory of marijuana as a gateway drug. Finally, it will explore our fundamental liberties and give the reader an understanding of many previous misconceptions of marijuana.

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States and has been since the 1960’s. Reports indicate that nearly 100 million Americans have used marijuana at least once. “The 1992 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse reported that approximately 5 million Americans were using marijuana weekly. In addition, 2 to 3 percent of high school students used marijuana daily, and nearly 70 percent had used it in the past month. The average age at which a person starts using marijuana is 18 years” (Hubbard, John R., Franco, Sharone E. 1999, p2583-2588). Such widespread usage of marijuana has had huge effects on our society today. “Police make about 700,000 arrests per year for marijuana offenses. That’s almost the same number as are arrested each year for cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, Ecstasy, and all other illicit drugs combined. Roughly 600,000, or 87 percent, of marijuana arrests are for nothing more than possession of small amounts. Millions of Americans have never been arrested or convicted of...
