Virgin Founder and Entrepreneur
Sir Richard Branson is one of Britain's best known successful entrepreneurs who combine’s his enthusiasm for running the Virgin group with his love for high-risk, high-adventure, world record breaking attempts.
After dropping out of school at the age of 15, Richard Branson, who suffers from dyslexia, had his first taste of entrepreneurial success at the age of 16 when he published a student magazine entitled Student. He then went on to leverage from his new found entrepreneurial skills and in the 1970s Richard founded the hugely successful Virgin Records, named as such due to the fact it was his first business venture.
From this small start-up company the Virgin Music Group - record labels, music publishing and recording studios - was sold to Thorn EMI in a $1 billion dollar US deal in 1992.
But Richard didn't only occupy his time with music, in 1984 Virgin Atlantic Airways was launched and is now the second largest British long haul international airline and operates a fleet of Boeing 747 aircrafts to New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Orlando, Boston, San Francisco, Washington, Dallas, and Tokyo. He started Virgin Atlantic Airways after a flight he was scheduled on was cancelled. Upon hearing of the cancellation, he quickly had a charter jet liner secured, and invited the passengers of the cancelled flight to fly for free. He jokingly posted a hand-written sign above the entryway, reading: "Virgin Atlantic Airways - Flight 1." Several of the passengers of that flight became investors of the airline.
