There are many inspirational, strong black people who influence my life in unique ways.
Because of their example, I am inspired to do the best that I can in all things. I am reminded
daily that everything I do is a representation of myself, my family and my race. I am encouraged
to pursue my goals no matter what trials come in my way.
My grandmother and my mother demonstrate what it is to be independent, hard working black
women in a society where being a black woman is equal to inferiority. Their lives are a living
testimony to me and the experiences shows me; endurance, perseverance, strength, love and
I am the third generation of a small family that originates from the sunny island of Jamaica. My
grandmother faced many adversities as a child growing up in a poor family. She wasn’t able to
complete her education but thanks be to God, she looked past her difficulties and came to
Canada for a better opportunity. She also brought her three children with her. She didn’t have
much money when she just arrived in Canada, but God always makes a way for his people. I am
able to tell you that she maintains the same job today that she got 28 years ago. Because of her
efforts, my family and I are living comfortably in a good and safe neighbourhood.
My grandmother inspires me to focus on my goals and what I have to do in order to achieve. Her
life story demonstrates the will power of a woman who didn’t have much as a youth, but was
able to pave the way for her future generation. She did not allow her obstacles to keep her
back. Instead she pushed through them. Even though my grandmother was not able to complete
her school education, I can honestly say that she is one of the wisest women I know.
