For many years obesity, has been ignored, but recently it has been the number one issue in America. Obesity is a term used to describe overweight people. Adults with a BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than 30 are considered obese. Childhood obesity is also increasing drastically; it has risen 20% since the 1980s. “ 13 % of children tow of five years of age, 18% of children six to eleven years of age, and 17% of adolescent twelve to nineteen years of age in America are obese” (Goutham Rao, American Family Physician, pg. 56). Over 25 % of adults in 10 states are obese, including Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, and South Carolina. Mississippi ranked as the heaviest state, Colorado as the least heavy state in America. 119 million Americans are either overweight or obese. That’s a quarter of the United States population that’s overweight!
Obesity is a gateway to other serious diseases, like diabetes and heart disease. Obesity is a significant health threat. The extra weight puts unusual stress on all parts of the body. It raises your risk of asthma. Obese people with asthma had significantly worse asthma control, lower asthma related quality of life, and have 4 to 6 times higher risk for asthma related hospitalization than non obese asthmatic. Since obesity has become the top priority in America, many doctors, psychologists and fitness trainers have focused their priority on preventing childhood obesity in efforts to improve our nation’s public health.
In my opinion, it is important to approach obesity with an understanding of the social stigma that obese kids or adults face. “This can have serious consequence for emotional and physical health. “ The epidemic of obesity in youth is spreading at alarming rates.
