From the moment I met Mark Mason, I knew there was something very different about him. As I looked across the room, I noticed a gentleman standing there with a black fedora on his head, a purple bandana, a purple button-up shirt, and the sweetest smile I had ever seen. At that moment, I knew I had to meet him. He caught me looking at him so he began to walk toward me. My heart began to beat a little faster with every step he took. Soon he reached my seat; he very politely introduced himself and we began to talk. It was like talking to an old friend that I hadn’t seen in years. It was like we had known each other forever. We ended up talking all night, learning so many wonderful things about each other. I continue to learn more and more about him every day, since we have been together from that first night we met. Not only is Mark my best friend, he is also my fiancé. Mark is my best friend for many reasons. He is giving, volunteering his time at the food bank; he makes a great Santa, bringing cheer to all the children at Christmas time; and he is an amazing massage therapist, using the healing power of his hands to benefit those in need.
Mark has volunteered at The Bread of Life Ministry Food and Clothing Bank for more than 30 years. He began volunteering there after his house burned down when he was a young child. He remembered the preacher bringing his family clothes and food after the fire. Instead of feeling sorry for himself because he had just lost everything, he saw the good in what the Bread of Life was doing and wanted to be a part of it. He does many things at the Ministry, including preparing the food boxes for the families, bagging up donuts to be given out, sorting out the donated food, and loading and unloading the trucks. He has even entertained children while their parents had to fill out paperwork. He’s not afraid of getting his hands dirty or doing a...
