History Report | Persuasive Essay: Slavery |
Brief History of Slavery
Slavery can be traced back to ancient cultures. It has been in existence since the beginning of man and is constantly referenced in the Bible and ancient writings of many philosophers. Based on the documentation it is evidenced that slavery has existed throughout the whole of human history, in one way or form or another. Possible the earliest evidence of slavery is seen in the story of Moses leading the Israelite slaves from ancient Egypt (Exodus 5–20). Historically, slavery was a mixture of debt-slavery, punishment for crime, the enslavement of prisoners of war, child abandonment, and the birth of slave children to slaves. The Greeks believed in the theory of natural slavery, this meant that some men are slaves by nature. Slavery in the United States was an important part of the plantation economies. There are many reasons to support slavery including biblical, historical, sociological, economic, constitutional and political.

The New Testament too expresses support for slavery in the fact that Jesus never comes close to expressing any disapproval of slavery or enslaving human beings. Sample passages include:
* A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master (Matt. 10:24).
* Who then is...
