Controversy has spanned over the years as to which approach to reading should be used in the typical classroom setting. As children collect information regarding oral language before they speak, they also need to collect information about written language before reading. Young learners’ enjoy books that contain brightly colored pictures, rhythm, and wordless books. Wordless books help them to create their own stories and emphasize that books contain stories. As children begin to grow older, it’s essential that they learn the difference between words and pictures. Without the recognition of words, there would be an incomplete foundation for constructing meaning. Phonics, along with other the use of context, word parts, syntax automatically enables a reader to recognize words. Learning the basics (relationships between letters and sounds) enables children to decode words they have never seen before. As this process becomes more automatic, it releases children’s attention to the higher-level activities involved in comprehending the activities. Success in reading either the systematic approach in phonics or in whole language procedures should be experienced by all learners.
Phonics is just one piece of the puzzle. Phonics and phonemic awareness are often confused. The goal of phonics instruction is to help learners develop the alphabetic principle. Studies indicate that students with reading disability have exceptional difficulty decoding words (Rack, Snowling, & Olson, 1992). Phonics instruction that teaches decoding is expected to remediate this deficit and enable these students to make better progress in learning to read. Learners who understand the alphabetic principle know that the sounds of spoken words are mapped onto written words in systematic ways. As learners develop an understanding of this principle, they become skillful at including letter-sound connections to figure out unrecognizable words.
