In this paper I will discuss the psychological disorders, Schizophrenia, Major Depressive Disorder, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I will explain the role of both biological and psychosocial factors in their origins. I will also discuss medications used to cure, lessen the effects of these disorders, explain how they help, and some of the negative effects the drugs can produce. |

A psychiatric disorder or disease is something that has an effect on a person’s psychological stability.   Such disorders are typically treated by psychiatrists or clinical psychologists (Pinel, 2007, p. 481).   Some common forms of psychiatric disorders and diseases include: schizophrenia, depression, mania, anxiety disorders, and Tourette syndrome.   Treatment for these types of disorders can vary, but often drugs and therapy are two of the commonly used methods to help treat sufferers of such psychiatric disorders.   These disorders are all quite unique and symptoms can vary from one individual to the next, in fact many psychiatrists and psychologists continue to discover new things about these disorders as they encounter different cases.

Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that is widely known due to the nature of its bizarre and frightening symptoms.   People who suffer from schizophrenia often face a loss of reality, strange behavior, delusions, social withdrawal, and hallucinations (Pinel, 2007, p. 482).   MSN Encarta (2009) points out that, “A person with schizophrenia may have difficulty telling the difference between real and unreal experiences, logical and illogical thoughts, or appropriate and inappropriate behavior.”
