The psychodynamic perspective mainly focuses on the unconscious mind and its influences on the conscious and early childhood experiences. The psychodynamic perspective is a more modern version of the psychoanalysis perspective, by being more based on a sense of self and other motivations rather than sexual motivations. While the previous study was based on Sigmund Freud’s ideas in the sex drive controlling ones emotions (Ciccarelli, & White, 2009).
The personality theory for Psychodynamic perspective is mainly based on Sigmund Freud’s personality theory. The mind is divided into three parts: The conscious mind, the preconscious, and the unconscious mind. The conscious mind contains all of the person’s current awareness. The preconscious mind contains memories, and events which can easily be remembered. While the unconscious mind remain submerged at all times only breaching during symbolic times such as dreams, or other unconscious behaviors (Ciccarelli, & White, 2009).
There are also three divisions of personality in the psychodynamic theory. The id, the ego, and the superego, the id is based on the pleasure principle. If it feels good, do it. The id contains all of the basic biological drives for example hunger, thirst, self preservation, and sex. This personality is present at birth. The ego is the way people deal with reality since people cannot live their lives based on instant gratification, the ego is developed to assist in coping with the inability to live in the id. The ego does this by working on the reality principle, which is the need to satisfy the id only in ways that will not lead to negative consequences. The superego is the moral watchdog of an individual’s personality. The superego contains the conscience, which is the part of a personality that makes people feel pride for doing the right thing, and guilt for doing the wrong thing.
