Everybody knows that rail transit is a major component of the transportation system. A lot of rail transits have built on around the world, and some of them were built in many places in the U.S: New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston (Todd 7)… We are going to have one in Honolulu. Is that a good news or bad news? But first of all, there are many problems that need to be faced if the rail transit is built.
First, Honolulu is simply too small for any light or heavy rail system. Why? Because Honolulu is just a circle island and Honolulu’s population is estimated 375.571 or more at this time, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates (1). That’s why cars will be used useful to drive any destinations around the island. In addition, Honolulu has a great bus transit system that can have some of the good things as rail transit has: reduce traffic congestion, lower traffic death races… more over, with a small area, Honolulu has an impediment. Why it has a small area is the obstacles of it? Based on a comprehensive analysis of transportation system performance in major U.S. cities, it finds that city with large; rail transits are more efficient than otherwise comparable cities with a small landscape (“"Impacts of Rail Transit on the Performance of a Transportation System”). We don’t really need a rail transit now.
Second, a lot of money will be needed to build a rail transit. It will take about $3.9 billion to build a 20-mile system that runs from East Kapolei to Ala Moana Center, with 19 stations along the route (Inouye 1).   And where is the government getting money from? Absolutely, they are getting money from us and other taxpayers. The final cost of the Rail, nobody knows but it will be the biggest financial burden Hawaii’s taxpayers will face.
