Ralph's symbolize democracy. When Ralph is elected chief by the majority of the tribe he uses his power to protect, understand, and act selflessly. Most significant, Ralph uses his elected power to protect the group. he achieves this sense of protection is by striving to build shelter. Ralph expresses his discourage. "And they keep running off. You remember the meetings? How everyone was going to work hard until the shelters were finished"" (Golding 50). Ralph is disheartened that no one is eagerly and willingly helping with the shelters that he feels are so necessary. After calling a meeting to discuss the importance of shelters, Ralph feels shelter is way to stay safe from any number of nature's occurrences, such as the unpredictable weather and wild animals. Equally important, Ralph tries to maintain fairness through his listening. He attempts to listen, understand, and assist every boy's concerns, especially those of the littluns. After a long adventure with night quickly approaching, Ralph explains that he needs to keep the younger boys safe. "We can't leave the littluns alone with Piggy. Not all night" (Golding 117). Ralph is concerned that the littuns might not be safe by themselves or with only Piggy, so Ralph debates whether to go back to camp or not. It is clear that Ralph feels uncomfortable unless he knows the Piggy and the littluns are definitely safe. The third trait that Ralph shows in his leadership qualities is his selflessness. Ralph's first priority is the group as a whole, not what is best for himself. Once the boys assemble themselves on the island, Ralph tells the boys, "There's another thing. We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire" (Golding 38).
