Ralph is the best leader because he is a team player, is productive, is able to prioritize, and believes in civilized rules. Ralph said: “We must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire” (p.37). This quote shows that Ralph believed in teamwork. He repeated himself with the word “we” to emphasize togetherness. Ralph’s objective for rescue is important for all of the boys. This shows Ralph’s ability to prioritize for everyone. Jack said “I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. We’re not savages” (p.42). This quote shows that Ralph represents social order. He is productive. This statement also shows that Ralph had the power to influence Jack and the other boys. Ralph is a better leader because he reflects a civilized social order of working together.
Ralph represents democracy and was elected to lead. Piggy said: “That’s why Ralph made a meeting. So we can decide what to do...” (p.21). Piggy’s use of the word “we” and the fact that he confirms Ralph wants a meeting shows that Ralph is democratic. It also shows that Ralph wants to hear from the other boys. According to William Golding “The boys all agreed to vote for a chief by raising their hands. Ralph was elected to be chief. He states “The circle of boys broke into applause” (p.23). A democracy is formed when everyone has a chance to decide who is going to be their leader. It is also written that the Ralph turned to the others and said “This belongs to us” (p.28-29). Ralph was referring to the island. This quote shows that Ralph included everyone in his thinking. Ralph believed in including everyone and that even the island belonged to everyone.
